Used Server Price Index 2026: What Refurbished Enterprise Hardware Actually Costs

Hawk Shen · Aug 7, 2026

"What should a refurbished R750 actually cost?" is the single most common question in our conversations with procurement teams. Public answers are surprisingly hard to find: vendors quote on request, marketplaces mix conditions, and most "market reports" publish numbers without sources. So we built the index we wished existed.

The HKCHL Used Server Price Index tracks publicly listed asking prices for benchmark enterprise hardware — the servers, memory, CPUs, and drives that make up most corporate refresh projects. Every figure below comes from a real, publicly accessible listing collected on August 7, 2026, from established refurbishers and marketplaces including PCSP, ServerMonkey, NewServerLife, The Server Store, ETB Technologies, Bytestock, Newegg, and eBay business sellers.

Methodology: Read This Before the Numbers

  • Asking prices, not transaction prices. These are public listings. Volume deals typically close 5–15% below asking.
  • Minimum three sources per model where public supply allows; each model below lists its sample size.
  • Median-based. We report medians and ranges rather than averages, so one outlier listing cannot distort the picture.
  • New and refurbished tracked separately. On memory and storage the two markets can differ by 2–6×, so mixing them would be meaningless.
  • Quarterly cadence. This is the Q3 2026 edition. Snapshots are dated; hardware prices move.

We deliberately publish the method with the data. If you spot a figure that no longer matches its source, tell us — corrections make the next edition better.

Rack Servers: 2U Benchmarks

Model Bare Chassis Configured Systems Samples
Dell PowerEdge R750 (15G)$2,950–$4,100
median ≈ $3,200
$5,300–$9,300
Dell Outlet refurb: $7,596
8 listings
Dell PowerEdge R740 (14G)$292–$499$713–$4,939
sweet spot 128–256GB: $1,170–$1,730
8 listings
HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10$304–$575$1,200–$2,150 mainstream
max-spec (1TB RAM): $4,533
7 listings
Lenovo ThinkSystem SR650≈ $1,500–$2,240 (indicative only)3 listings (low confidence)

Representative sources: PCSP (R750 16-bay custom chassis $4,085; R740 chassis $292; DL380 Gen10 chassis $304), The Server Store (R750 24-bay NVMe chassis $3,499), NewServerLife (R750 configured from $5,307; R740 from $713), ServerMonkey (R750 from $7,350), Bytestock UK (R750 chassis £2,250). The generational staircase is striking: an R750 bare chassis costs roughly 7–8× an R740 chassis, which is why so many buyers run mixed fleets — R740s for dev and light virtualization, R750s for production. See our R750 buying guide for the full spec comparison.

DDR4 ECC Memory: Two Separate Markets

Module Refurbished New Notes
32GB DDR4-3200 RDIMM
(Samsung M393A4K40EB3 class)
$103–$284
median ≈ $185
$140–$643
median ≈ $262
7 listings; factory-boxed new commands a large premium
64GB DDR4-3200 RDIMM$349–$599$549–$775Buyback bids: $288–$352

Sources include ServersFit, Computing Worlds, ServerPartDeals, OEMPCWorld, Senetic, and Newegg. One data point you will not find in other indexes: buyback reference pricing. A US trade-in buyer's published bid for 64GB DDR4-3200 modules currently sits at $288–$352 — a useful floor when you are valuing decommissioned memory for asset recovery. DDR4 remains the volume market for the 14G/15G and Gen10 installed base; if you are planning upgrades, our DDR5 upgrade guide covers when the jump to DDR5 platforms pays back.

Enterprise Storage: NVMe and HDD

Drive Condition Price Range (Aug 2026)
Samsung PM9A3 3.84TB U.2 NVMe
MZQL23T8HCLS-00A07
New (US retail)$1,990–$2,195 — five independent sellers within ±5% (Aaawave, Newegg, Best Buy, eBay)
WD Ultrastar HC550 16TB SATA
WUH721816ALE6L4
Server pulls (near-new, 1-yr warranty)$471 (US)
WD Ultrastar HC550 16TB SATANew (US retail)$735–$792
WD Ultrastar HC550 16TB SATANew (Hong Kong retail, 5-yr warranty)HK$2,199–2,299 (≈ US$282–295)

The last row deserves attention. The same 16TB enterprise HDD retails in Hong Kong for roughly 30–40% below US retail. Hong Kong's role as an Asia-Pacific redistribution hub — zero import duty, dense inventory, fast turns — creates structural price gaps on high-capacity drives, and it is a large part of why global buyers source storage through Hong Kong traders like us rather than domestically.

CPUs: The Upgrade Market

Processor Refurbished New / OEM Kit
Intel Xeon Gold 6338 (32C, Ice Lake)
SRKJ9 · fits R750, DL380 Gen10 Plus
$1,448–$2,780
median ≈ $2,050 · ETB, Bytestock, Aventis, eBay refurbishers
$2,797–$3,701
HPE kit P36928-B21, Scan UK OEM

Second-socket CPU upgrades are one of the most cost-effective life-extensions for 15G/Gen10 Plus servers: a refurbished 6338 roughly doubles a single-socket node's capacity for about a quarter of the CPU's original list price. The lower-power 6338N variant trades on eBay from around $1,150 used.

How to Use This Index

  • Benchmark quotes. If a supplier quote lands far outside these ranges, ask why. There is usually a legitimate reason (warranty depth, configuration, testing) — or there isn't.
  • Value your trade-ins. The buyback reference row gives you a floor for decommissioned memory before you negotiate asset recovery.
  • Time your refresh. Comparing editions quarter over quarter shows which platforms are depreciating fastest — the best buying windows sit right after the steepest drops.
  • Ask for the unlisted. We quote any configuration on request; the index covers benchmarks, not our full inventory.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often is this index updated?

Quarterly. Each edition is a dated snapshot of publicly listed asking prices; historical editions stay online so you can compare trends across quarters.

Are these asking prices or actual transaction prices?

Asking prices from public listings. Volume deals typically close 5–15% below asking. We state this explicitly because procurement teams deserve transparent methodology, not false precision.

Why are Hong Kong prices sometimes lower than US retail?

Hong Kong is one of the world's largest redistribution hubs for enterprise IT hardware: off-lease equipment from across Asia-Pacific consolidates here, import duties are zero, and inventory turns fast. On high-capacity HDDs the gap currently exceeds 30%.

Can I request pricing for a model not covered here?

Yes. The index tracks benchmark models with the deepest public data. We quote current availability and pricing for any enterprise server, memory, CPU, or storage configuration — contact us with your target spec.

The Bottom Line
