Why the DDR4 vs DDR5 Question Is Harder in 2026

When DDR5 first appeared on Intel 12th-gen and AMD EPYC 9004 (Genoa) platforms, the economics were straightforward: DDR5 cost a premium, so most buyers stayed on DDR4. Two things have changed since.

  • Your refresh window is 3+ years out and you want headroom

There is a third option that fits many enterprise environments: extend the DDR4 fleet now, transition to DDR5 at the next natural platform refresh.
